Eda Yildiz: Flowers, Stars, Dreams, and Hope

Eda in Sen Çal Kapımı is a charismatic female character; the kind of woman with the power to make a statement when she enters a room.  Eda calls Serkan charismatic in the story and we obviously see why he is so. However, it is Eda who freely wields the magic in Sen Çal Kapımı; the magic which Serkan keeps coiled tightly in control, within himself. An intelligent modern girl, Eda is equal parts funny, naughty, talented, and capable, hiding a poignancy within her that allows us to see her as a beautiful human being with flaws, and empathize with her. She is not perfect and she is fine with it.

Ayse Kutlu and her team of writers paint Eda's character with so many different hues; it is impossible to stereotype her with tried and tested definitions. Eda is passionate about everything she believes in. Her past is mysterious. We only know that losing her parents, the feelings of being an orphan, and disconnecting with her grandmother (who seems to be a silent but strong presence in her life so far in the story) have definitely given her a maturity and sensitivity beyond her age. But strikingly, we do not see this past preventing her from being joyful. Death and the pain of loss failed to break her. She finds beauty and happiness in simple things: the way she tends and nurtures her flowers, her pleasure in cooking, music or dance, funny slogans behind trucks and the way she could spend hours drawing and creating beautiful designs, all of these show us her hopeful, optimistic nature reflecting the real strength of her soul.

Eda is a fighter- a warrior princess. She fights for what she believes in and doesn’t hesitate to express herself. She surprises Serkan throughout the story with her unpredictable sweet nature and her hot fierce anger. She is the one who buys a cupcake to celebrate Serkan’s birthday and gifts him the world; and the one who shatters glass vases one by one to vent her anger as a patient Serkan watches her destructive spree.

This girl does not delve in self-pity, she has no care if someone is rich or poor and it’s just heartwarming to watch the way she values her friends and her aunt above everything else. Eda is the kind of friend we would all like to have. Someone who would stand in our corner and forgive our mistakes. A teary-eyed Melo looks at Eda and does not doubt Eda’s love for her even when she knows the gravity of the mistake she had made by letting Kahn enter her life and take control of her emotions. Melo knows Eda won’t be quick to condemn. Eda is not Serkan. Her compassion is clear in her character- how can she not be, for she cares for her little plants and flowers, tends to them, talks to them, how can she not be compassionate! Not just Melo, she even forgives our hero despite the horrible accusations he throws at her. She doesn’t hold grudges, she forgives you and all she needs to hear is that you are sincerely sorry.

Her impulsive, gutsy, funny nature adds another layer of petals to her personality. She can do her brand of slapstick comedy so well that she melts a cynical Serkan into a smile. She is not just holding his heart, but also of millions of Sen Cal Kapimi viewers, who are equally captivated by her charm and attitude. Her vulnerabilities add to her strengths. Eda is strong but this does not make her hard. It does not seek to dominate. Her strength lies in her ability to understand what is important and what is not, in her ability to make fun of herself, to not take herself seriously. She feels the wind on her face, she feels the trees swaying, she smells the flowers while the rest of the world is frantic around her. She may not know her heart or Serkan’s heart. But she knows what matters. That in life, what matters.

Eda is proud, so much so, that she does not want to give Serkan even a tiny clue to her real feelings since she believes his mind only sees Selin. She would rather hold her head high and look the part of the rebel than let Serkan see how vulnerable and scared her heart is when it comes to him. She would rather keep her distance and say “I hate you” and “I don’t want to see you” than admit to her true feelings because that would mean Serkan’s pity and she does not do pity. No no. She would pretend to be content till the last minute of their contract. Then, when no one is watching, she will look at the stars in the silence of the night, and as her eyes well up, she will quietly wipe it down with the edges of her blanket. When morning comes, she will look up at the sun, just like her flowers, and her hope for a better day will give her the joy she needs. Oh Eda! How we feel your pain. How we long to tell Serkan what you are hiding in your heart. Eda Yildiz will stay as a remarkable example of womanhood in all its glory even after the time of Sen Çal Kapımı

  1. I completely agree with your character description of Eda. But her pride is one factor which is creating all confusion. Out of pride, she doesnt want to reveal her love to Serkan who openly states he wants to break his ex-girl friend's engagement. Because of her reaction, Serkan feels Eda hates him and this fake engagement situation. He is slowly attracted to her but he feels she does not like him and he probably feels a passionate girl like Eda might feel bored with a workaholic like him. So he finds situation to retain her with him. i like a strong heroine but her completely opposition action of being angry with Serkan so that he wont know her liking is confusing Serkan. He is also not blameless. One side he is star gazing with Eda and looking at her caringly and next moment says i want to separate ferit from Selin. Both feel one thing and do another! Lack of communication!

  2. Lack of communication and misunderstandings...very true... quite frustrating to watch them playing tennis with each other's hearts! The basic character flaws of Eda and Serkan are creating problems in their relationships (which is realistic), when compared to rom-coms where happy or sad incidents in the plot move the couple together or apart. This also means that the story as such doesn't move fast but the characters keep evolving. While some enjoy this and view this as a deeper or realistic approach towards relationship portrayals, there might be some who feel that they want something to happen so Serkan and Eda could just get together and the story can move forward.
